How? We're not a great empire any more. I think people greatly overestimate our military capabilitys, even if there was the political will. It's 2015, not 1815. If we couldn't beat a few thousand flip flopped up goat fuckers in afghan what chance do we have against isis.

Before people get either misled or confused. Putin, an ally of Assad, is helping him deal with anti Assad rebels. Putin also wants to ensure that Latakia remains as a Russian, Med fleet, naval base.
His objective is to keep Assad in control.
